Friendship

Friends are a wonderful thing, I have been blessed to have some wonderful influences in my life for good and bad. This last week I had the opportunity to catch up with some old friends, it surprised me to see the changes in everyone, or the lack of change in others. I feel that not only have I physically changed but that mentally I'm in a completely different place than I was the last time I saw some of them. In high school I felt like my whole life was a popularity contest and if I wasn't one of the top three contestants I wasn't worth anything. I have no one to blame for those feeling but myself, life is what you make it.
When I reached college I believe the biggest change in me occurred. Being on my own was the most liberating feeling in the world, not having any prejudice, or standards to live up to was the best thing that could of happened to me. I knew what was right, what was wrong, and I could finally make decisions based on my own knowledge instead of the knowledge of others. My friends in college are the most important to me, because truly they have shaped me into the woman I am this day. They made me courageous, strong, independent, witty, and smart. I will always hold a place in my heart for each of them.

Now that I am out of college, I'm still on my own but I've separated from many of those wonderful college friends, not out of lack of wanting to be their friend but a parting of ways. My life has changed again in a phenomenal way without me even realizing it. The friends I have made since being out in Utah have been absolutely what I needed at this point in my life. People who love me for who I am and can help bring me closer to my goals. I want to say thank you to so many people but feel like all my words are too inadequate for the love and support they have shown me. Every time I see the news and hear about all these people in the world that do strange and horrible things, I wonder how I got so lucky as to have not had to put up with those kind of people in my own personal life. Sure everyone has quirks in their personalities, but for the most part, my friends have been the most wonderful people you could ever meet.

I hope that no one ever takes for granted the blessing each friend we have can be. I lost a friend in college, it was one of the worst feelings in my life to know that I would not be able to have the same relationship with them I had grown used to. Never in my life have I felt so much sorrow over a situation that was out of my hands. Knowing that I had taken a friend for granted and then hurt him was something it has taken me over a year to come to terms with. And while I know the situation was not completely my fault, I will always feel like I wasn't able to do enough to save the friendship. Because I know how it feels to lose even one friend, I can't even imagine what it would feel like to lose another..it would be the worst kind of loss one could imagine.
I know I will have achieved all I can when I can be the kind of friend to others that they have been to me. I hope that I can be someone to be dependent, kind, and a good listener, someone to laugh with, someone to cry with, and someone who can touch others lives.

I guess my main thought on the subject of friendship is this: Everyone will make dozens of aquaintences, and meet even more people throughout their life. We are all running in different directions, but you only make a handful of friends who will be on the same course in life as you. So when you meet them, recognize the blessing and enjoy the journey.
